Break Free Reflection
Break Free is a movement that empowered and liberated people while tackling stereotypes. It meant getting vulnerable and exploring our deepest problems with others. It was more than just a grade but about class bonding and developing a sense of appreciation for everyone. Breaking free from stereotypes that have been institutionalized for centuries is something that we will all carry for the rest of our lives. This project taught us so much in a short amount of time but creating a video from scratch in less than two weeks felt impossible when it was first introduced. Getting into our groups felt natural but when it came down to creating ideas for our project proposal, everything felt foreign. Our group struggled to find a good video idea but once we did we turned the idea into a video that my group is very proud of. The time constraint put lots of pressure and stress on our group but we wasted no time and began to film the Friday that we had no school. Dividing the work and conquering different parts of our project relieved the pressure and helped put us at ease with each other. Break Free taught me that I should stand up for what I believe in and speaking up is something I shouldn't be afraid of. This project made me realize that I am interested in learning more about the issues people of color face and how it affects them in their daily lives. I hope this project continues throughout the years, so it can teach kids the importance of history and how it has affected us today. I hope each class has a different spin to this project but learns the fundamentals of what it means to "break free." I also want others to have an exhibition as great as our class did. Having it at Queen Bees, was a great venue for the different types of performances we had. (To read more about exhibition click here.)
