1. What celebrations do you have for this week?
I celebrate the fact that I am the only one who knows how to upload a working VR video onto Youtube. I was really proud of myself because of the amount of work I put in to learn and complete my job. I struggled with the time constraint I had because normally VR videos on Youtube take hours just to upload and I was only given two days. Since I was importing and exporting a lot of footage, it took a great amount of time that I didn't have. I made $200 in two days and I feel so accomplished. This job allows me to work less time in Professional Development. 2. Describe a time you have experienced cognitive dissonance during this project. How did you deal with it? I experienced cognitive dissonance when I thought I could accomplish multiple tasks in a short amount of time. My deadlines were coming up for multiple classes but I just didn't have enough time to complete all of them. In the end, I had to sacrifice time away from other things. 3. How did your opinion of hashtag activism change/shift/evolve over the course of the week? Which one of the readings did you find most convincing? These articles have helped back up my argument in support of hashtag activism. My favorite article is "Hashtage Activism Isn't a Cop-Out" by Noah Berlastsky. It's an interview with Deray Mckesson, who leads organizers and activists against police brutality. I agree with everything that Mckesson said like how social media activism brings people from the community to talk about issues that they've dealt with. Social media activism helps with getting instant feedback, being a center for information, creating communities, and creating conversation/narratives about issues that are normally in the dark. 1. Specialists: You are now a third through the time allocated for building a VR world. What is your plan to earn an A for this project?
Fortunately, I made a lot of money the first week of VR work time that has allowed me to just work in professional development now. Everyday I work in professional development to earn a daily income. I have participated in a panel to talk about internship which allowed me to earn more. I also plan to go to ThinkaBit lab to ensure that I get an A in this project. 2. How has your perspective on what constitutes reliable news changed? • Do you think you are a more critical consumer of information? Why do you think this ability is important to your own life/to the country? Everything has bias so it's hard to find a reliable news source in general. It's important to do your own research to ensure you can make an opinion on correct information. This has made me a more critical thinker because I have to make sure that I understand the entirety of whatever I am learning about. It's important for everyone in the U.S. to become critical consumers of information because a lot of people are misinformed when it comes to what they buy, who they vote for, or just anything really. 1. What is working well so far? What problem have you noticed so far with this project and how would you fix it?
This project is working very well so far. The only problem i've encountered so far is the fact that we only have one 360 camera for my group and anyone who wants to use it. We've had problems with keeping the camera charged, the amount of storage on the camera and just the amount of time we were given. If we could have two Rico Theta cameras, it would be better. 2. What strategies do you find helpful when trying to work in a distracting place? What is working well so far? There's always a lot of chaos in the classroom so I've gotten use to it. The noise of students doesn't really affect me anymore. If I really can't concentrate, i'll find a quieter work place or listen to music. 3. How can words be used by those in power to influence our choices? Words are powerful but they're even more influential when it comes from someone that you admire. People in power can use their words to attract or persuade individuals. Powerful people have the opportunity to create change for the better or keep a cycle of hate going. It's actually really scary that some people have so much power with what they say. I definitely think it can impact our choices in life if someone from power says something that will affect people personally. 1. What was the most disturbing prediction in the Singularity reading and why?
The most disturbing prediction in the Singularity reading was the fact that 70-80% of jobs will disappear in the next 20 years. It's sad that technology will take over and the jobs that seem so important now will die out in the future. Imagine all the jobs that people are passionate about that wont even be necessary. 2. In what way was the job/fair interview process authentic? How could it be made more authentic? What did you learn about yourself through this process? I felt that the job fair and interviewing process was fair because of the questions the producers asked. The questions actually correlated to the job qualifications and experiences that we've had as individuals. I don't believe there is any way to make it truly authentic because we are hiring our friends and classmates that we've known for years. It's a conflict of interest because we know how our classmates perform in class projects and the work they're willing to put in or even if they lack in motivation and completing deadlines. I know some producers hired their close friends because of the relationship and not necessarily the skills that they have. It's hard to compete for a job when everybody has the same fundamental skills but I've learned that I had to put in more work to outshine in my interview compared to others. I kept what I knew to myself so I was guaranteed a job. 3. Does advertising shape or reflect our society? Should there be stricter regulations on advertisers? If so, what restrictions should there be? Advertising is such a huge part of our everyday lives. It's on the cereal boxes we eat to the cleaning supplies we use. Advertising shows that we're always competing to be the best and get the best. I think the regulations we have on advertising are fine. There should always be restrictions on advertisement directed at children. Products meant for 18+ older shouldn't in any way be aimed to grab children's attention. Engineering:
In hopes to be a 360 videographer I am learning various skills such as different types of 360 cameras, the programs used to edit the film and the sacrifices it takes to make a 360 video. This week I've watched numerous tutorials on 360 editing. I've learned about Adobe Premier and how our computers at HTH have an extremely old program that won't work with the modern cameras we have. My goal for next week is to become an editing expert using Adobe Premier CS6/CC or Final Cut Pro X and to actually create a video among my group. I want to also work on the Ricoh Theta XS camera and the 360fly. English: When learning about propoganda and double speak, I became extremely aware of how prevalent these techniques are used in our everyday language and specifically politics. In class, we analyzed different political posters and the two types of double speak incorporated into each. This made me wonder what propoganda i've read and if i've believed it in the past. This reading has taught me to analyze deeply and question what people are saying to find out the real truth. It's hard to realize that even the good things in life use propaganda. |
