Stereotype Threat An activity we did in class was take the words, "Mexican", "Asian", "White" and "Black" on paper and write down the stereotypes that we have heard about each group. This activity helped us think about the stereotypes that affect each group and how we can break free from them. |
Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do by Claude M. Steele was the introduction to our Break Free project. This reading shows how a simple act can change the way people view you. In this story, a man is always being avoided while walking down the sidewalk for the color of his skin but once he whistles a Vivaldi song people begin to feel less threatened. The act of whistling Vivaldi is associated with being well educated which is why people feel less threatened by this character.
