Much has changed since I last blogged. Today I started my new internship at High Tech Elementary with my new mentor, Mrs. Alli, a 4th grade teacher. Mrs. Alli use to be my 7th grade teacher at High Tech Middle Media Arts and I absolutely love her! I learned a lot about myself yesterday at my old internship, I realized that it wasn't for me and because internship is such a valuable time I realized that I needed to do something that I have a great passion for! I made the switch to working at a wellness center to putting myself into a classroom of young energetic kids that require all of my time and attention. After just being with these kids for one day, I realized that making the switch was the best decision for me. It's inspiring to see how differently these children view the world compared to how I do. I've always known that working with children is something I love to do. Every summer and occasionally on weekends, I volunteer at Covenant Grace Church with the Children's Ministry. I cherish the friendships I have made with all the kids I have worked with.
My morning started off extremely joyful, everyone gathered on the carpet as two students started the morning meeting. The question was "What is your favorite shoe brand?" and everyone got their turn to share their answer. After we finished sharing, we then played a version of hot potato. The game is great to play in the morning because it allows students to interact with each other early on in the day. After that we transitioned to math , where we drew blue and red cubes from a bag to show them how probability works. Today I was given a bookclub with a group of boys to read the book, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. It was a challenge to get them to discuss the pre-reading questions because they love to chat about everything else and get distracted by one another. It was one of the challenging times of the day because i'm still learning their routine and how they structure their class. Tomorrow, I will have a better understanding of what to expect and to do. I like to have a routine down that I can follow. Next was Engineering Class with Mr. Riley. The transition from winter break back to a school day started to get to me around this time. I felt tired and it's difficult to be tired around these kids because of the help and enthusiasm they require from me. Overall, today was great and I really bonded with a lot of kids! I am excited to see the friendships and skills I develop from this internship. I'm happy I made the switch to join this enthusiastic, chatty, and wonderful group of kids! I'm grateful I get to experience the world of 4th graders with one of my favorite teachers, as well.

Today is my first day of internship here at Restor Medicine. This morning I was anxious, nervous and excited to begin my day here. I had to familiarize myself with testing kits and supplements. Because Dr. Nicola isn't here for this week, today I worked with Nurse Carmen. She first spoke in big unfamiliar science words that worried me but I learned some of what those words meant. I learned that it is common that most holistic doctors don't use insurance and that most clients pay out of pocket which is surprising to me. This office is pretty quiet among the patients that come in and out to see the numerous doctors that this place has to offer. The amount of doctors in here is kind of amazing: naturopathic doctor, chiropractor, nutritionist, psychologist, and more. Talking to Nurse Carmen, I discovered that when she was starting out that she knew that she wanted to be in this field of research. She knew that there was other ways to cure people instead of just using medicine. I hope that as this internship progresses I get to take on a bigger project and learn about a specific disease, probably Lyme Disease because that's what Dr. Nicola specializes in.
The hours are really flexible here and the doctors have their own schedule. When interviewing Dr. Nicola she said she loved that she was her own boss and had the power and freedom to make her own schedule. Well, tomorrow's the official FIRST BIG DAY of Internship. What are you most excited about your internship and why? And at the same time, what are you most nervous about and why? Tomorrow, Wednesday the 6th, is my first day of internship at RestorMedicine. My mentor, Dr. Nicola, won't be there but i'll be working with her team for this week that she is not here. I'm excited that internship is finally here and that instead of going to school, I get to learn more about holistic medicine and gain experience in a working environment. I'm nervous about the types of projects and tasks that I will have to be doing because what if I don't have enough knowledge or some important skill to complete it. I can easily adapt and learn quickly so I hope that I develop more skills throughout this internship process. I'm also nervous that I do not have enough background information on holistic medicine itself or medical knowledge at all. Upon talking to Dr. Nicola, I hope that the projects I work on are up to my level of knowledge and understanding, but is also a challenge.
My interview meeting was at RestorMedicine, located in Hillcrest, with Dr. Nicola. Her and I discussed some of the responsibilities I would have when working with them. Dr. Nicola didn't have a set project for me but we talked about what I would most be interested in learning. My main focuses were essential oils, sports therapy and just learning as much as I can about holistic medicine. I'll be shadowing other doctors and employees when Dr. Nicola isn't there.
